Initiated in 2023, the cooperation between THF and Malta Taekwondo Association aims to promote Taekwondo as a vehicle for peace, social development, and the integration of refugees, by providing training and competitions opportunities for those living in Malta.
An elite program to shape refugee athletes
Malta
Malta is home to more than 11 000 refugees and 2000 asylum-seekers, predominantly from Bangladesh, Libya, Syria, Sudan and Ukraine. Since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022, Malta has also issued over 2000 Temporary Protection certificates.
Promoting social development and integration
Program
Since January 2025, the Iron Taekwondo League (ITL) launched the THF program, welcoming five Ukrainian players (all aged from 12 to 16 years) alongside with Ashik Sunil, a THF senior athlete benefiting of THF support since 2024 and who went on to win two international medals in 2024. The THF team currently train at the ITL dojang in Santa Venera under the guidance of coaches Ditmir Vodinaj (kyorugi) and Jovo Mirkovic (poomsae), with the support of the Gianluca Barbara (ITL), the THF and the Malta Taekwondo Association.
