Za’atari
Refugee Camp
THF program in the refugee camp of Za’atari has been launched in 2024, on an existing Taekwondo program operated by the Korea Refugee Project (KRP). THF and KRP signed a MoU, joining forces, allowing now participants to practice Taekwondo at his best through THF leadership.
A program built on the Korean culture
Camp
Opened in 2012, the Za’atari Refugee Camp welcomes people who fled the civil war in Syria. Under the joint administration of the Syrian Refugee Affairs Directorat (SRAD) and UNHCR, its population consists of over 80,000 refugees.
Promoting well-being, social inclusion and personal development
Program
The program is addressing weekly 250 Syrian young boys and girls, aged from 8 to 18, counting various colored belts, blacks and beginners. Participants are training Kyorugi technics in different groups (morning and afternoon sessions from 1h15 to 2 hrs.) across 5 days, developing their physical and mental capacities, as well as soft skills and values. A local Taekwondo coach and 1 volunteer are in charge of running the activities. The most talented athletes are training from time to time outside the camp, and are integrated to the THF Jordan Refugee Team, participating in local competitions, shining gold, silver and bronze. In 2025, 11 years old, Ilham Al-Sheikkh defied all odds to claim gold at the Fujairah Open (children category), showing her talent to the world.
Since 2022, World Taekwondo and THF are organizing a two days humanitarian sport festival “Hope and Dreams Sports Festival”, aimed at gathering refugee youth from Azraq and Za’atari refugee camps, delivering joy, hope and dreams through sport demonstrations and competitions, celebrating sport and Olympic values.
