Renowned mountaineer Hong-gil Um has agreed to promote the WTF’s Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation, or THF, at a high-profile event in central Seoul on March 17.
Hong-gil Um was made a “Goodwill Ambassador” of the nascent charitable body by WTF President Chungwon Choue during the Korea Fair Play Awards and Forum, held at the Korea Press Center in Seoul, Korea.
The forum’s main event was a special lecture delivered by Um, the executive director of the Um Hong Gil Human Foundation, entitled “Challenge and Conquest.”
As a mountaineer, Um has scaled the world’s 16 highest peaks, so is familiar with the Himalayas and Nepal, where the THF kicked off a pilot project to assist earthquake victims in January of this year.
Um’s foundation focuses on education and health development programs in the nation. In a reflection of Um’s alpine exploits, it aims to build 16 schools in Nepal. So far 10 have been built, and three more are under construction.
The THF is also operating pilot projects in Syrian refugee camps in Jordan and Turkey.
