Since 2015, the region of Diffa, in the south-east part of Niger, has been continuously affected by terrorist attacks, triggering large scale internal displacement. In 2017, UN agencies estimated that were more than 130’000 internally displaced and more than 100’000 refugees living in the region.
In the Fall of 2018, the THF will launch a taekwondo academy in Diffa in collaboration with the National Olympic Committee of Niger with an aim to help displaced persons of the area deal with psychological issues caused by the traumatic events which they were forced to suffer. Taekwondo trainings will also help young refugees by providing them with physical well-being as well as social benefits, in an environment where such individuals can feel safe.
