Vatican City (May 30, 2018) – Pope Francis attended on Wednesday, during his weekly general audience on St. Peter’s Square, a taekwondo exhibition held by ten young Koreans, boys and girls, from the two Koreas.
On the notes of Franz Schubert’s Ave Maria, five athletes dressed in black kimonos and five others dressed in white kimonos performed a taekwondo demonstration under the tender gaze of the Argentine pope. The demonstration ended with a dove released as a sign of peace by a Korean girl, also wearing a kimono. “To see the two Koreas together is a message of peace for all humanity,” said the pope.
A banner proclaiming “peace is more precious than triumph” was unfurled during the audience. “The Holy See accompanies, supports and encourages this meeting”, Pope Francis assured during the end of April before the historic summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in.
